Farnham Parish Church
The Tilford Bach Society joins with St Andrew’s Church in
Farnham to celebrate the Trafalgar Night 200th Anniversary with a
rousing performance of Haydn’s Nelson Mass. Haydn’s
title for the mass is Missa in Angustiis (Mass in Times of Distress)
and though composed before Trafalgar, at around the time of the Battle
of the Nile, after Nelson’s great victory on October
21st,1805, it soon became known as the Nelson Mass. Haydn and Nelson
became friends and some accounts say that Nelson gave Haydn a gold
watch he had won at Aboukir Bay, in return for the pen that was used to
compose a cantata for Lady Hamilton.
Directed by the Society’s Musical
Director, Laurence Cummings (who recently conducted Giulio Cesare at
Glyndebounre Festival Opera and will shortly conduct
Monteverdi’s Orfeo at the English National Opera), an
international team of soloists is led by Ana-Maria Rincon, a specialist
in baroque and classical repertoire.
